A few weeks ago during our Exile Conference Trevin Wax made a statement that has stuck with me. Trevin said, "It's hard to hate those you pray for." We all have those people who are difficult for us to love or even care about in the smallest of ways. This week Jesus takes a person who fits that profile and instead of shunning him or talking about him, Jesus eats with him. Eating with someone is very personal. Christ took this stand for someone who was unlovable...it was Zacchaeus.
Your 1st-5th graders have already identified people they don't want to be around, and likely put some kind of action in play that reflects that decision. It's likely that action has a negative effect such as, mocking a person, shunning a person, or spreading rumors about that person. I want you to stop for a moment and realize those are exactly the things that happened to Christ before His crucifixion. Now that you've realized that lead your kids to pray specific prayers for those they dislike. "It's hard to hate those you pray for." By doing this you will build a model of how to handle anger/frustration in their future.
This weeks details are...
Scripture: Luke 19:1-10 (Zacchaeus)
Memory Verse: "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” James 4:10
